How long is the certification good for?
The Servsafe certification is good for 5 years. It is a national certification and many states will accept it. The local certification’s expiration will vary: You can check with your local/state health department.
I was certified before; do I need to take the class/test again?
In Philadelphia, the requirements are that you must take the class and retest every 5years. Some other counties just require you to retest without taking the class again. The regulations can vary so you should check with your local/state health department.
I don’t read/speak English well. Is the test in other languages?
The test is available in a few other languages. Otherwise, the student can bring a translation book to use during the exam or pay for a licensed translator.
Chinese; Book & Exam
Spanish: Book & Exam
Japanese: Exam only
Korean: Exam only
French Canadian: Exam only
How long until I get the results (know if I passed)?
If you take an online exam, the results are available immediately. For the paper/pencil, the results take about 2 weeks. The ServSafe certificate is an e-certificate, so students can go online in 10 business days to see scores and print certificates. The instructor will go over the details of how to do that in the class.
Can I take the class/test online?
The student can take a proctored on-line exam. (Proctored: the instructor has to sit and watch the student take the exam). If you are interested in that option, I will have our Lead Trainer contact you to discuss the details.
Is there a cost to re-test?
Yes!
CLASS: Exam only. $60.00
Re-train and test again: $145.00
PRIVATE: Exam only: $150.00
I already have a textbook; do I need another one?
The textbooks get updated every few years to stay in line with the FDA food code so that students have the latest information available. Since certificates are good for 5 years, usually, by the time a student needs to renew, the books have been updated, and you would need to buy the latest edition. However, if you have multiple staff members coming from the same establishment and already have the latest edition, you don’t need to buy another book. The other staff can use the book you already have. The cost will be different.
Private Class: Student has textbook $200.00
I have a lot of staff that need to be trained, can I get a discount?
Yes, there are discounts available depending on the number of employees. Group discounts start after 6 staff.
What if I can’t make it to the class? Is there a fee…Money refundable??
The fee for the course is non-refundable. If you cannot attend a class, you can re-schedule for $40. In the case of emergencies, this fee may be waived.
What happens if the class is canceled?
Classes are hardly ever canceled…but if a class is canceled, the student will be notified and re-scheduled to the next class.
Do you take credit cards?
Yes. There is an additional 3.5% p/p processing fee for credit card transactions.
How soon do I need to get the textbook for training.
I suggest you get the book at least 2 weeks before the class to give yourself enough time to study. At the latest, a student needs to get books at least 72 hours before the class date.
What does the training consist of?
The training combines PowerPoint, food safety videos, visual props, and practice questions. The trainer will review before the exam starts. The student exam is timed- a student gets 2 hours to complete the exam.
